Comprehensive eye examinations include a patient history to ascertain any symptoms the individual may be experiencing, medications taken, and work and environmental conditions that could have an effect on the patient’s vision. Other components of an eye examination include the following:
- Visual Acuity measurements determine how well each eye is focusing.
- Keratometry measurements evaluate corneal curvatures. This tests is especially important to properly fit contact lenses.
- Refractions establish the correct lens power required to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.
- External examination of the eye using instruments to magnify and illuminate assist the doctor in his evaluation of the cornea, eyelids, conjunctiva and the tissues surrounding the eye.
- An assessment of the lens, retina, and the posterior portion of the eye may be performed via dilation of the eyes.
- Ocular pressure is performed via a tonometry.
Doctors of optometry receive extensive training examining, diagnosing, and treating eye disorders. Optometrist complete their undergraduate education followed by 4 additional years studying the structure, function, and disorders of the eye. Optometrists study human anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology. After completing a rigorous graduate program, optometrist are awarded a doctoral degree.
